The Explorer's Guide

Finding the perfect place for a home in Minecraft can be tough and can take a long time. This guide will help you on your wanderings until you find your perfect home.

Step 1: When You Spawn:

When you spawn, the first thing you need to do is to "punch" trees. Collect 16 wood, which will give you one stack (64 pieces) of wooden planks. Which should be enough for a make-shift home. It's not going to be big and fancy. Just a square four by four home three blocks high. We'll worry abut that later, though. Right now you need to make a wooden pick and a crafting table. Not in necessarily in that order. Then mine twenty cobblestone. Make a stone pickaxe, stone sword, and a furnace with twelve of those. The rest of the cobblestone is your's to use.

Next you're going to want to kill every chicken, pig, and cow in sight. No mercy. Then get three pieces wool from sheep to make a bed. Now you have materiel to make a bed to skip night.

Now you can go explore until sundown. Then build a four by four home three blocks high with a roof over it. Make sure it is squared off, or else you'll be fighting monsters all night long: in your home! Once you're inside, start cooking your food and eat it if you need it. Then craft a stone axe and a new sword or axe, if you need it. Once your food is done cooking, go to bed. When you awake, get a full stack of wood, take down any evidence of your home, and the repeat the process until you find the perfect home.

Continuing Faction Servers!

I'm doing this post from my iPad, so it's a little different. I can't do any daily music, sorry!

I realize I've been talking about Faction servers in Minecraft for a while, but there's just so much to talk about. Well, even though we've been talking about it for a while, you don't know everything about a faction server, unless you did research on your own. Faction servers are actually normal Minecraft servers running a mod named the Faction Mod. This mod is created to make teams (factions) that can declare alliances and etc.. Therefor, to understand this kind of server better, we must understand how the normal Minecraft server works.

A normal Minecraft server runs no mods, even though mods on servers are extremely helpful. Usually this is just multiplayer survival mode. Which sounds fun. Every server (even non-video game servers) are held in a massive computer which saves data from the machines that use them.

We've covered the art of warfare and how war in factions work, but we haven't really covered what it's like doing actual Faction wars. You can hurt enemies in their territory, which is great, but you cannot teleport away in enemy territory. If you are in neutral territory and people from enemy factions are within 320 blocks away from you, you cannot teleport.

Now that we have covered the restrictions, it's time to tell how faction warfare really is inside the raids, battles, and defense.

Raids are when a faction goes to another faction's/person's home and loots, kills, and completely destroy whatever is in sight. Kind of like those army ants in the Amazon. Everything in sight is gone and wiped out. A raid can take a while. There are several steps to a raid and you need to be acquainted with them all.

Step one: Entry. Usually a Faction's base is heavily fortified with secret entrances, various traps (we'll talk about how to make some later on), and sometimes guards. Even if the entrance is an obvious wooden door you still cannot enter if the territory is claimed. So what do you do? Well there are several things you can do. The best is to make a TNT cannon just outside their fortress. Now it is a bit embarrassing to admit this, but I don't know how to make a TNT cannon, but you can look it up on the web. Another way is a block glitch. Typically two people go underground and get as close as they can to the surface of their base. Then one person teleports away and asks to teleport back by means of the second person. If all goes well the first person will be on top of that person, thus in the base, unless you aren't close enough to the surface. This only, of course, works with bases on the surface.
Underground bases are a little more difficult since you can't glitch your way in, and you need tons of space for a TNT cannon. The best way is to put TNT as close to their border and blow it up. If all goes well, you will have made damage to their base, scaring some people and (sometimes) stirring them up and getting them to come outside.

Step two: Attacking: After entering their base, there's most likely someone in it. If so, read this section, if not read it for next time. A raid needs a large group. It's not an option. It's a must. Everyone armed with iron or above armor and swords. Strength potions are nice. Have one person for potions. Splash strength for your teammates and splash poison for your enemies. After killing everyone once and looting their belongings, they will most likely attack again. Maybe with or without armor and weapons. Just keep killing them until they run out of stuff. Once they do they will submit and understand that they lost this battle.

Step three: Looting: This really doesn't need to be talked about, but it is important to read this section anyways. You cannot place, destroy, or open things in other faction's territory, so you might want to claim just the little bit of land around the chest. So that your faction can open it. Of there isn't a faction mod or higher there, you can't claim that land, so you can't loot them.

Step four: Destroying: You can only do this if it's your land or neutral land. Once you are finished with the raid and everyone from the defending faction has submitted or has run away, destroy their base. Flood it, burn it to the ground, or just destroy it, it doesn't matter. Just destroy it to where they can't build it back. It may seem mean, but now that you have done everything else to them, they aren't going to show you mercy. So just slow them down by destroying their home.

That's a raid. The whole thing is basically a mean and merciless attack.

Battles are rare occurrences in Faction servers. All battles are are just giant team PVP fights. It's recommended that you have a person for all types of potions. Strength, poison, and health, and make sure they're all splash.

Defense kind of speaks for itself. I'll go ahead and explain it anyways. This time, the raid is on you. So, haha. How's that for irony? Anyways, use any defense mechanisms you have. If you don't have any, build some right away. TNT cannons are awesome in the middle of a high wall. Even though they may not be accurate, they do some killer AOE (area of effect) damage. They will also typically discourage your attackers. If they hear that thing explode from out of no-where, they'll jump at their computer screens. I'm guilty as charged on that one. Another great defense is a big, obvious entrance that leads to no-where. Have some pressure plates inside and some pistons behind the wall. It will push the wall towards the attackers, and something is going to have to give, and it won't be the wall. Another is a moat of lava around your base. Check your server rules to see if lava and fire is allowed in your server.

See you later guys! As usual leave comments below!

Continuing: How To: Play on a Factions Server!

Today we're going to cover the art of warfare and power in a Faction.

Click here for your Minecraft music.

How Come I Can't Claim Territory for my Faction?

This can be because of two reasons. You either aren't a Faction moderator or higher, or your Faction isn't powerful enough to claim land yet. Your Faction's power depends on the power of all of its members combined.

Let's say your Faction had two members. Each person has a power rating. 10 is the max and -10 is the lowest. You loose power when you die. The Faction Warriors had two members. So each member had 10 power. So since 10+10=20, they can claim 20 blocks of land. Let's say one member died. Now his power is 8. Since he died the Faction power is now 18 since 8+10=18. So now they have more land than they know what to do with. They have 20 blocks when they should have 18 blocks (20/18). Not necessarily a bad thing. Now let's say the Faction Rogues was Warriors' enemy. They came and got those two blocks on their border. Now the Faction Warriors has a land of 18/18

It's a little confusing, but that's how it works.

The Art of Warfare:

War is a common thing with Factions. So is peace.

There are two types of Factions. Peaceful and normal. Peaceful Factions cannot deal or take damage except in war zones (friendly fire is on).

Normal Factions can deal and take damage from any Faction except their allies (we'll get to that in a minute). They can kill any Faction and hurt anyone except in the victim's territory. They can kill anyone without a Faction.

Now, you cannot destroy or build in another Faction's territory.

Allies are great. They can't hurt you and you can't hurt them. You go to war with enemies of your allies' and vice versa. Faction become allies when both Factions agree on being allies.

Enemies, not so great. They can hurt you anywhere.

See you guys next time!

How To: Play on a Factions Server!

In these next couple of posts, we'll be going over how to play on a Factions server.

Here's your music:

Click here for your Minecraft music.

What is it?

A Factions server is basically many, many teams or clans banded together. Each has their own members, rules, bases, and territory. In Factions servers there are three kinds of places.

1. Faction territories: places where Factions have claimed the land their turf. Typically if you're not in their Faction and are spotted, you will be attacked.

2. War Zones: Where Factions some Factions come to battle. The awesome thing about Factions is that each Faction is like a nation, so they declare war a lot and have allies that help them. In a War Zone, you are open to be killed mercilessly.

3. Wilderness: Where you can build a home for yourself of a base for your Faction. This is an open PVP area where you can be killed.

How to Survive:

You can work your way up the Factions and get well known. For instance, if you are just starting, it's no good to make your own Faction. Join one. From reading these posts you should have a pretty good knowledge of Minecraft, so state that you have skills and know how to play on a Faction server. State what servers you have played on before and they may let you in.

Once you join that Faction, stay a while. If it's a good Faction, you might want to stay forever. If it's a small one, that's fine too. Once you work your way up on the server, you can join better Factions and then get followers if you want to make a Faction of your own.

Typically you don't build homes in this server. You like in your Faction's base. Usually Factions have homes for its members or at least places to keep their stuff locked safely. If not, you know what to do from older posts.

We've Gone to War!

Congratulations! Going to war with another Faction is a good thing for the victors. It earns them more fame and thus more members. So you've gone to war, and now you're in the War Zone. Oops. Better have good gear. Carry only weapons like a good sword, an bow, and about ten arrows. I believe you cannot build in a War Zone, so find a tree to climb or a safe place if you fight with a bow. If you fight with a sword, you can easily hide and surprise enemies.

It's not uncommon for your enemies to launch an attack on your base. This is okay, because they cannot destroy your territory, and there cannot be any traitors unless they break open the entrance. But the traitors cannot kill you. If this is the case, and the enemy is on your door, this is an easy fight unless your base is nothing but a log cabin with a door.

Typically a base has points for archers, and if so, use them. Snipe your enemies and laugh. Then collect your loot when it's safe.

My Faction is Failing.

This is an article for what to do if the Faction you created is failing. That's okay. There are two things you can do. You can keep it, try hard to get other members. Or you can abandon it. Option one has a bigger advantage, of course. Your Faction may seem low to other people, but it may be good for people just starting, so cater to them. The only con is that if your Faction just fails and you're the only one in it, you'll have to abandon it, making you lower in status and making it hard to join a good Faction.

Option two may not be the most preferable, but you won't have much of a lower in status, making it easier to join a better Faction.

Next time, we'll have more tips! Bye guys!

Continuing: How To: Play on a PVP Server

We're continuing yesterday's topic. There's a lot more you need to know about this kind of server. Over the next few weeks I'll be letting you guys know how to survive multiplayer Minecraft on the different kinds of servers.

I'm also adding a new feature to the blog.

From now on I'm going to pick a music track for you guys to listen to. You can play it while you read this blog. I'll try to match it up with the mood.

Here's today's music track:

This is Great and All, but I Need a House.

Houses are an important part of Minecraft. On some PVP servers they have hotel rooms for you to temporarily/permanently stay in. Others you're just on your own. For the last type, I recommend a house that looks like this:

There are several things to note about this house. One is this entrance. It is actually the bottom part of the home. Then there are ladders on the inside of the column. Then there are trapdoors on top of the ladders. Once you get in, there is a door leading to the bridge that leads to the bedroom where all personal belongings are held. Now, a person can still grief this home, but it will be an effort.

This home (and all homes) would be extremely easy to break into if it weren't for a system called locking. When you lock something, only people you specify can open it. Here's how to lock something:

1. Craft a sign.

2. Put it near the object you want to lock.

3. Type in: [PRIVATE] on the top bar just like I typed it (caps and all) and press enter.

4. Type in your username for Minecraft.

5. Tada.

That simple.

What About That /home Thing?

When you build a home, you may have to hunt for some stuff. That's when you use the /home feature to instantly return home. To set your home, simply type in /sethome and then test it out with /home.

That's basically the basics. Have fun!

How To: Play on a PVP Server

Let's face it: there are jerks out there. Playing on servers in Minecraft can be great, but there are griefers out there. Griefers are people who kill you when you spawn, ruin your home, or just do anything of that sort. So here's some articles on how to cope with griefers and play on a PVP (player versus player) server!

What is PVP?

PVP mean player versus player. Basically, PVP is one or several people trying to overcome other players. The objective in PVP is to kill as many players as possible. Most games have certain areas set aside for PVP so it isn't just a killing madhouse game. Not Minecraft. It's open PVP, which means there's no limit to where you can kill people. Some servers, though, try to take care of that problem. Ask your server owner or an admin where you can PVP on your server.

How do I Play Minecraft on a PVP Server?

Simple. Just as you would on a normal server. Punch wood, build a home (we'll get to that in a later article), survive. It's just in a multiplayer environment. Some people will just go all out and try to hunt you down. That's just PVP.

How do I Avoid PVP if I Don't Want to do it?

Typically you stay near your home and type in the chat something like this: "I do not wish to PVP, if you see me, don't kill me. I am not accepting any teleport requests." Now, that last sentence may not have made much sense to you. In multiplayer Minecraft there are macro codes to teleport or do certain things. Some macro codes are limited to admins or higher.

For instance, if I wanted to teleport to a person named, oh, say njh3, I would type in the chat: /tpa njh3. Njh3 in return would type in: /tpaccept or /tpdeny depending on whether he wants to see me right now. Another nifty thing is the /home macro, but we'll get into macros later on.

Just say /tpdeny to all teleport request when not wanting to PVP.

How do I Run Errands if I'm Getting Killed All the Time?

Simple, you go scouting first. Pack stuff you don't want to loose to other players and go scouting. Scouting is also good if you want to raid someone. Typically you only pack an iron sword, a bow, and a few arrows. Food if the trip takes a long time. If you see someone, don't attack right away since their home may be near by. If they see you and attack you, feel free to wipe them out unless they have better gear than you.

When and if the coast is clear, go back home and get the rest of your gear. Then make the journey back very cautiously.

Is There Any Other Types of Servers?

Oh yes! There are Faction PVP servers in which you team up with others and war on other factions. You can even make your own, which we'll go over in a later post. There are also Creative servers in which the focus is on building what you want.

What is This Whitelist All About?

Depends. There are two types of whitelists; one being a type of chat where there is profanity or other things like that, the other is an exclusive server only for certain people.

Next time we're continuing the How To: Play on a PVP Server!

How To: Find a place for a home!

Today I wanted to discuss a very important subject: the perfect place to find a home.

Now, I'm going to give a little quiz. No peeking at the answers or anything like that.

1. When playing Minecraft, do you tend to get lost a lot?

A: Always!

B: Never.

C: A little.

2. Do you like to explore for your resources or have them all nearby?

A: Nearby.

B: Explore.

C: A combination of the two.

3. Which is more important: a cool-looking house or a functional house?

A: Cool-looking!

B. Functional all-the-way!

C. Sphunktional: a mixture of the two.

If you answered mostly:

A: You would like a home in the Plains biome. Find a forest that is nearby and you have all your resources nearby! And since dungeons or pre-built mines are easy to see on the Plains, you can build a cool looking house!

B: For you explorers and functional lovers, I recommend the Taiga biome. Full of places to (not) get lost in. Wolves and trees are common, so if you get lost, you have a buddy and wood for a new home.

C: I recommend the Extreme Hills biome for you in-betweeners. It's full of pre-built mines and dungeons to explore and loot, not to mention animals and other necessities.
